Head and Tail - 100x100cm acrylic on canvas £645

“Head and Tail” is a bold and thought provoking painting that captures the essence of a fish by focusing on its two most distinct elements: the head and the tail. The composition is unconventional, with the fish split into two sections, each occupying adjacent billing at the top of the canvas. The fish’s head is depicted in striking detail, the sharp glint of its eye reflects light, conveying a sense of vitality and realism. The texture of the scales around the head glimmers in shades of silver, yellow ochre and blue/greys. In contrast, the tail’s curves are graceful, and its iridescent hues shift to deeper silver greys, suggesting fluidity of movement.

The negative space between the head and tail is intentionally left blank, along with the background, with a simple soft blue that allows the viewers imagination to bridge the gap. This void creates a sense of balance and invites contemplation about what lies unseen. The painting’s colour pallette is cool and restrained, with metallic tones dominating the fish, accented by hints of warm undertones.

“Head and Tail” is a study in minimalism and abstraction, celebrating the essential forms and textures of a fish while encouraging viewers to consider the relationship between parts and the whole.
