Tommy Lee Came to Tea - 60x60cm oil on canvas, framed POA

“Tommy Lee Came to Tea” - a study of skin, and whose face could be more fascinating to paint? An intimate close up study of Tommy Lee Jones’ face, capturing every line, crease and shadow that tells a lifetime of stories. His expression is enigmatic - halfway between amusement and skepticism, as if he’s just been asked to take a sip of Earl Grey tea and isn’t quite sure how he feels about it. His deep set eyes, sharp and knowing, seem to pierce the viewer, holding a quiet authority.

The brushwork is rich and layered, emphasising the rugged texture of his skin, sun weathered, time-etched, so full of character. The background is understated, a muted wash of paleness in contract to the vibrancy of the skin tones.

There’s a subtle irony in the title - “Tommy Lee Came to Tea",” as if the concept of the famously no nonsense actor in such a setting is both unexpected and intriguing. This contrast is toyed with in this painting, blending grit with refinement, toughness with quiet contemplation, leaving the viewer to wonder - is he amused, here reluctantly? Is he here at all?
