Delusions of Leadership - 100x100cm oil on canvas POA

Delusions of Leadership depicts a Jack Russell Terrier - standing upright on his hind legs, gazing intently at a hand offering a treat. The dog is fully engaged, his muscular body full of anticipation and obedience. The human figure is only partially shown, cropped from the chest up and out of frame, with black Dr Marten boots planted confidently and one hand extended, commanding the dog’s attention.

The backdrop is a natural setting, softly rendered, drawing the viewer’s focus to the interaction.

The title of this paining, “Delusions of Leadership,” adds a rich layer of irony. While the human may appear to be in control, leading the dog with commands and rewards, the composition hints at an inversion of power. The dog’s unwavering focus and excitement over the treat could imply that the one who seems to lead is actually being manipulated by the simple mechanics of reward and response. The leadership might be more of an illusion - both participants locked in a system where the supposed leader is just a predictable and controlled as the follower.

It’s a witty commentary on authority, control, and perhaps the ways we deceive ourselves about who’s really in charge.
